Lux Brings Japanese American WWII Experience to Life Online

June 1, 2005 - Seattle

A new perspective on the World War II-era internment of Japanese Americans is available online. Lux, a Seattle-based online design, development, and documentation company, today released a multimedia project for Densho, The Japanese American Legacy Project.

Lux graphic designers faced the challenge of presenting large amounts of information in a compelling and navigable manner. Lux developed a visual theme as well as an organizational metaphor. One family's real-life story became the focus and main story line, connecting the main elements of the incarceration camp system and providing a human face to camp life.

Due to extensive amount of content, a Lux Information Architect was heavily involved from the very beginning of the project to ensure that users could quickly access needed information.

One requirement of the project was the ability for the site to stand alone (without a server) and run on kiosks at the camps, which are now maintained by the National Park Service. Lux used advanced XML techniques to develop a project that mimics database search functionality without actually using a database.

The presentation is available on the Lux Multimedia Page.
